The SSG-82 sniper rifle is specifically intended for use in the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and is designed for the M74 5.45 x 39 mm cartridge. Requirements included HA XXII (counter-terrorism), HA PS (personal protection) and HA VI (passport control, tourism).

The SSG-82 was developed and manufactured by the Stasi in Suhl. Furthermore, the MP IX was previously used here. Parts for the GDR production of the Kalashnikov variants, including the WIEGER, were manufactured by VEB FAJAS based in Suhl.
